Hills (to die on)

Because of that tumblr post, some friends and I started calling those stupid little things you're willing to fight for/against "hills". People who know you usually avoid bringing up these subjects, knowing you could go ballistic.

So, here are my hills:

• the way the word "liminal" has been emptied from any interesting meaning
• Directive (EU) 2019/904 requires plastic bottles to have "captive lids", which prevent the lid from being separated from the bottle for recycling. Aside from the fact that I was told as a kid to always remove the lid before throwing a bottle, the idea is good. But the actual implementation by companies is absolutely impractical. It often closes on its own while you pour/drink, and makes it way harder to properly screw the lid back
• On escalators, the moving handrail is never synchronized with the stairs
• in france at least, laundry detergent is never actually labeled as such. You have a 50% chance of picking up fabric softener instead if you don't know your brands

And the big one:

• in french, you can order "un demi" of beer in a pub: it's a masculine word, implying that it's "un demi litre" (half a liter), when it's in fact half a pint, a pint being ~half a liter, so 250ml. It should either be called "une demi" (feminine, as in half a pint) or be half a liter. Several explanations are available online for that oddity, but no one knows which is true. Despite the fact that I'm usually team "people decide the meaning of a word, not the dictionary", this pisses me off for some reasons.
